SUBJECT :RITA TOURS FRANCE

Hi Jim,
Just thought you'd like to know that I took Rita on a charity car rally
across France to Monte Carlo. What a great drive it was, mostly on
secondary roads, but occasionally on highways. There were 20 cars entered
and we drove on average 250 miles a day. We had to figure out where to go
and made about 5-6 stops each day to solve cryptic clues. Points were
awarded based on the answers (and you had to arrive by a certain time or get
penalised). My navigator was my 13 year old daughter. We were the only
classic car (the rest were all new Porches and BMWs). We managed to finish
2nd! On the last day, we got to drive around the Grand Prix of Monaco
circuit (as it was being set up for the Grand Prix race). Great fun. I'll
email some photos once we get them developed.
On the way home, we put the car on the train and took an overnight train to
Paris. We spent a day touring up and down the Champs Elysee and by the
Louvre and Notre Dame cathedral. Some interesting video clips for sure.
Rita ran (for the most part) absolutely great, especially on the highway.
She even managed to average 20 mpg.(imperial gallon which makes it 17m.p.g.
American on a 4v carb.) She was certainly the most talked about
car in the event (the French just love "le Mustang"). The only thing that
went wrong happened after the engine was really warm (several hours of
driving) - at idle (or with the foot off the accelerator at slow speeds) the
engine would stall. Ian le Riche figures it was gas evaporating (from the
engine heat) before it made it to the engine. At speed, there was never a
problem. Now that I am back in Jersey, no problem at all (probably because
the engine never really gets hot here).
Is this something you've encountered before? Any suggested solutions?
Would adding an electric fuel pump make any difference? Any thoughts would
be appreciated.
Also, Ian tells me that the front brake discs will need replacing in the
next year or so. I thought I should enquire now in case they are difficult
to find. Do you know what size/shape they are and do you have (or can you
get) some?
We must be getting to the point where I should start to pay for these items
(I have no problem with that - you've been absolutely great on that front).
Talk to you soon.
